update: we visited the pup and found that a puppy virus had wiped out the rest of the litter. our sole survivor is still hanging in there, butch boy that he was, but he's seen the abyss. under that gorgeous coat he's skinny as a bean and if the congestion returns he won't make it. we named him "Jedi", although "Solo" seems more appropriate :/
